Boneyard Bone-a-fide Pale Ale

Also Bone-a-fide soaps available!

We had our first chance to try the Bone-A-Fide Pale Ale from Boneyard Beer at the World Beard Championship in Bend last May and we were more than pleased. We have since tried this beer a few additional times and are big fans. If you haven’t been to their tasting room, we highly recommend that you do. You can also find their beers at several local restaurants in town such as Brother Jon’s and Jacksons Corner.  It’s more than likely they will be serving this brew or the RPM IPA.

On a mission to help Boneyard break another record of growlers sold each Wednesday we headed on over to pick up a growler of Bone-a-fide. It was business as usual on Wednesday for Boneyard as they had a tent and grill set up for serving fish tacos and the ever present line to fill ‘er up! We were quickly greeted by the gang who is always friendly and ready to share their tasty treats. After a quick chat and news that a new shipment of apparel would be arriving next Wednesday we headed out knowing we would be back next week. On the way to the car one of the brewers let us know he was still working on the recipe for Bone-a-fide and hadn’t quite achieved what he was looking for. I wasted no time in letting him know that not much change was necessary. Bone-a-fide is already on it’s way to being a classic Pale Ale from Bend, Oregon.

    Appearance:

This one was a gold-copper color and slightly hazy. The head we poured was huge, but quickly went down leaving lots of lacing around the top of the glass. The head color was white and even when laying down it was always present at about a centimeter or two above the body. The carbonation was medium.

    Smell:

Smells of hops and piney grass hit my nose on the first whiff. Really has a great smell for a pale ale.

    Taste:

I get a slight taste of floral hops, but nothing overpowering. The taste hit me more on the side of my tongue with a slight sourness. There is some bitterness, but at 38 IBU's this one is not up there like the Imperial IPA's I am fond of.

    Mouthfeel:

A medium bodied drink that went down pretty smooth.

    Last Sip/Drinkability:

This is one of my favorite pale ales, and stands out among some good ones around here such as Old Prospector from Three Creeks, and Mirror Pond by Deschutes. With these heavy hitters in the region this one still holds its own! Very drinkable!

    Appearance:

Golden copper color with foamy white head.

    Smell:

The smell is wonderful: pine, citrus, definitely smell the hops, a bit floral (not in that order by any means) but to me, it smells like a beer I will be adding to my favorite list; A beer that I will enjoy to drink often.

    Taste:

Awwww yeah! The caramel, citrus and hop flavors are crisp and mingle nicely together. It is a perfect example of this West Coast style.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer has medium carbonation which I think suits it well.

    Last Sip/Drinkability:

I definitely enjoy this beer. I could easily drink this beer on a warm summer afternoon by the lake or after a great day of snowboarding. I need to remember to pick up a growler every Wednesday!

    Final Rating:4.5
