There are many great things about living in Central Oregon. From the lakes, rivers, and mountains there are lots of opportunities to experience the outdoors. One of our favorite hobbies here in Central Oregon is snowboarding at Mt. Bachelor. Every year we look forward to making turns down his beautiful slopes, and every year we look forward to riding up the Red Chair lift together.  This year we have started a tradition that involves drinking a Red Chair beer from Deschutes Brewery on our first run.  Really there is no better way to celebrate another year on the hill.

Deschutes has made a delicious batch once more and we will definitely be putting a dent in the supply!

History (provided by Deschutes Brewery)
Red Chair NWPA is named after the oldest operating lift at Mt. Bachelor here in Central Oregon. And just as the locals line up for that fabled mountain ride, they flock to our Bend brew pub whenever it goes on tap. One thing we’ve learned, “when the brew pub talks, listen.” For the past two decades, the serious beer fanatics down there seldom miss when we’ve hit on something truly special.

What makes this copper colored beauty so wildly popular? As a debut Northwest Pale Ale, it’s an adventure all its own. It has a plush body with satiny caramel flavors derived from seven varieties of malt. Yet, despite it all, it remains a hop-forward ale with that distinctive citrusy punch. Just minus any mouth-puckering bitterness.

    Appearance:

Red Chair is a golden brick road with hints of red cinder. The transparent body truly is an orange-red hue. The head on this one out of the bottle carried a beige tint and stood about a half-inch. The beer poured in the main image is actually from last season (2010).

    Smell:

Amazingly sweet and piny hops fill the nose with every whiff. There is a small hint of alcohol which is expected from one of Deschutes higher ABV brews.

    Taste:

Leaves a piny taste with bits of caramel. A very sweet beer, but balanced by a bitterness that makes it available for more than a few.

    Mouthfeel:

Feels a little heavier than the Twilight, but still light and refreshing. If this was available in the Summer I would still be in line for it.

    Last Sip/Drinkability:

One of my favorites from Deschutes. I put this one right up there with Mirror Pond, and Twilight on my list. It's no wonder why Deschutes is a heavy weight not just in Oregon. Can't wait to ride the Red Chair again!

This is arguable the best seasonal beer that Dechutes brews. I look forward to the stores stocking Red Chair every year. It has a clean, crisp, hoppy taste and I can never manage to have just 1. This NWPA is the best that I have experienced (Hop Head | Bend Brewing Co. – is a very close 2nd). My taste buds are rewarded every time is enjoy a Red Chair! It is best paired with some hot wings or sweet potato fries!!

Just finished off a 6-pack with a buddy while watching UFC Fight Night which took place in Seattle. This beer is my number #4 favorite out of the Deschutes Brewery line.
The smell reminds me of the PNW everytime I pop that top. You know when a beer is brewed in the NW, you just know.
Very good beer with a chill but I find this beer to be one of the few that holds a great taste even as it warms up a bit, which tends to happen when you”re managing 2 kids.. Outstanding!
