So, Cali has been trying to get me over to Ninkasi Brewing in Eugene, Oregon for a good while. She is always saying how she loves the brewery’s label designs, but has never tried their beer. The label on this one has her favorite colors in some sort of flower shape. “Definitely makes a girl go hmmmmmm…” in my Cali voice! This brew is classified as an Amber, one of Cali’s favorite styles. Hey, if it has a great label it has to be good right?! We will let you know in a few. First check out the specs:

The Sumerian’s must have known that beer is definitely something to be worshipped. And so does Ninkasi as they devoted this beer for those that believe in the Sumerian Goddess of brewing and beer, Ninkasi! Here’s to drinking beer in caves!

Appearance:
Dark amber/red that was slightly cloudy. Thick and sticky head.
Smell:
Good amount of hops and malts
Taste:
Seemed hoppy and and kind of dull to the tongue.
Mouthfeel:
Had a very bitter after taste. Pretty creamy feeling with slight carbonation.
Last Sip/Drinkability:
Not my favorite by far, but seemed ok for our night by the fire in the backyard. Didn’t feel like a red/amber for some reason. Maybe the chocolate notes I felt.
Final Rating:3
Appearance:
This was a reddish amber color with very sticky head that was thick and foamy.
Smell:
I could smell floral and nutty fragrances and it at first made me think of a hef.
Taste:
The taste was also nutty with a strong after taste reminiscent of IPAs for me, slightly bitter. I was hoping for a more “traditional red” taste and was surprised to find this did not suit the red category in my opinion at all. I thought of it more like a light IPA, not strong.
Mouthfeel:
This actually felt light and smooth when forgetting the taste.
Last Sip/Drinkability:
I would not order this beer again. I enjoy reds normally but as I mentioned, this did not seem to fit at all in the red category as it was not sweet. It seemed to be missing flavors but had the hoppiness of an IPA. I love the label on the beer though. :) And truly look forward to trying other beers from this brewery in Eugene, OR!
